When it comes to civet coffee, or Kopi Luwak, all that the drinkers know is its expensive price and unique flavor. Rarely do they know about the process of making this coffee and the article will reveal it.

Do you know how cruel it is to produce a cup of kopi luwak?

The most expensive coffee in the world, Kopi Luwak, is made from the poop of civet. The civets will eat coffee beans. Then the beans are partially digested in their bodies before being pooped out. The makers collect the poop and make it a coffee cup that people are willing to pay $80 just to taste its flavor.
The civet can be found in Southeast Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. They have a long tail like a monkey and face markings like a raccoon and have an essential role in the natural food chain. The civet eats insects, small reptiles and fruits like coffee, cherries, and mangoes and is eaten by leopards, large snakes, and crocodiles.

Before being locked in small cages for kopi luwak production, civets used to be considered a pest because they broke into commercial fruit farms and eat fruits. However, after finding that their digestive enzymes can change the structure of proteins in coffee beans, removing some of the acidity, delivering a smoother cup of coffee, civets become the target of the greedy people.
The popularity of civet coffee has become massive, adding to the fact that Indonesia is growing its tourism industry, allowing tourists to interact with the wild animals, leaving more and more civets to be confined in cages. First, for kopi luwak production and second, to attract tourists.

The civets are fed only coffee cherries. Some of them are obese, preventing them from move around while some are jacked up on caffeine. These civets are also forced to get on will a schedule, causing sores and abrasions, intense pain and discomfort. After several years, the civets unable to produce the coffee will return to the natural environment but sadly, most of them die because of bad health after years of harsh exploitation.
Now you have known the story behind a cup of civet coffee, which is cruel, outrageous and environmentally destroyed. Would you continue paying your money on this?
