Tottori Sand Dunes : Unique natural attraction
The Tottori sand dunes, the largest sand dunes in Japan and Tottori’s most famous tourist attraction, are the national natural treasures of the “cherry blossoms” country. Each year they attracting more than 1 million passengers.
The Tottori Sand Dunes, part of the Sanin Kaigan National Park, located just outside the city center, they span roughly 16 kilometers of coast along of the Sea of Japan and are up to two kilometers wide and 50 meters high.
The unique sand dunes were created over thousands of years. Today, the constant movement of the tides and the coastal winds continuously shape the sand dunes.

From here you can also explore the vast expanses of sand which lead off for several kilometers in almost every direction.
In the wind season, the sand dunes always change the altitude makes ripple waves catching the eyes. On windy days, the sand dunes become blur that makes visitors’ steps as “on Clouds”.
In the winter, snow covers whitely the sand dunes. In the autumn, the plants bloom purple break. The summer is a very crowded time to attract tourists to Sakyu beach by the blue water and the slopingly coastline.
Unique geographical features and a distinctive plant community creates the mystical landscape.
Coming here, you can experience sand-surfing, paragliding, desert terrain biking, or camel rides. In addition, during the summer evening, you can catch the Gyoka lanterns shining from the boats off the water.
