The study was conducted by a group of scientists led by Professor Anna Bornioli, a lecturer at Erasmus University (Rotterdam, Netherlands) for the conclusion: "Self-esteem and concern about one's own appearance is remarkable current status and should be viewed as a public health issue ".  The above research results are published online by the Journal of Epidemiology (UK).

To conduct the study, the scientists collected data from more than 3,700 teenagers in the UK aged 14. A group of children participating in the study were asked to self-assess their satisfaction with their body appearance.  In general, both boys and girls have a slight degree of body satisfaction.  However, the level of dissatisfaction among girls is higher than that of boys.

According to the researchers, girls tend to be dissatisfied with their thighs, abdomen, and weight.  Meanwhile, boys tend to dislike the body shape, abdomen and hips.  In addition, the results also indicate that about 33% of girls and about 20% of boys are dissatisfied with their weight.  Furthermore, about 25% of girls and about 20% of boys are dissatisfied with their current appearance.  By age 18, children are assessed for symptoms of depression.

Depression assessment results show that 10% of girls and 20% of boys report at least one time of mild depression period. Nearly 7% of girls and 3% of boys report at least one time of moderate depression period and 1.5% girls and 0.7% boys have at least one time of severe depression.

Since then, scientists assessed, the level of dissatisfaction with the body at the age of 14 has an effect on the rate of depression of adolescents in the UK.  In girls, each increase in levels of physical dissatisfaction increases the risk of mild depression by up to 63%, severe depression by 67%, and severe depression by the age of 18 years old.

For boys, each increase in physical anxiety at the age of 14 increases the risk of mild or moderate depression by up to 50% and the risk of severe depression by 18 years of age.

Physical dissatisfaction affects about 61% of teenagers worldwide, the team added.  This situation is very common among young people today and seems to have a growing trend.

Research results also show that therapies that help children reduce their self-esteem can be developed to treat adolescent depression.
