Giving used things as gifts can be weird, but it is surprisingly a new shopping trend. Gen Z and millennial shoppers are buying second hand gifts for Christmas.

The rise of second hand markets

According to a survey with 1,276 consumers, there are 61% of them who feel comfortable with getting second hand gifts, as long as it’s unique or difficult to find. Also, 63% of women and 59% of men are okay with receiving a used item as a gift. The percentage of Millennial and Gen Z consumers aged 18 to 34 who would give secondhand gifts is 49%, while 38% of consumers who are 55 years old and older would do the same. These statistics somehow indicate that resale retail market is rising. Retailers such as Macy’s, Madewell, J.C. Penney, Burberry and even the Kardashian-Jenner family are getting into the resale market.

The best second hand gifts for Christmas

The market is projected to reach $51 billion by 2023. Also, consumers are shopping with the environment in mind. They tend to shop with responsible retailers that address social issues and choose lower environmental impact delivery options like pick-up in-store (BOPIS) services. The growth of online shopping for second hand items is undeniable in the United States with main shoppers are young consumers. In addition, resale businesses are preparing for Christmas which is the biggest sale season in a year. Besides, top designer brands are joining this biggest resale markets as well. The most popular items can be Rolex and Cartier watches, handbags from Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Hermes. These are products with less wear and tear can be your best second hand Christmas gifts.

This new trend of buying second hand gifts for Christmas is friendly to the environment. Apart from physical items, some people opt for gift cards as Christmas gifts as well.
