Robots remind to wear masks and social distance

Pepper Robot, which is used by many countries to welcome visitors to shops, exhibitions and public places, has been upgraded with a new function by the engineers of SoftBank Robotics robot manufacturing corporation to remind everyone to wear masks for Covid-19 preventation. Recently scientists in Japan have presented a robot model that has the function of reminding people to comply well with COVID-19 epidemic prevention measures in public.

Pepper Robot has been upgraded with a new function by the engineers of SoftBank Robotics Robotics Group, to remind everyone to wear a Covid-19 preventing mask.

Pepper Robot, which is used by many countries to welcome visitors to shops, exhibitions and public places, has been upgraded with a new function by the engineers of SoftBank Robotics robot manufacturing corporation to remind everyone to wear masks for Covid-19 preventation.

Pepper's camera will detect human faces approaching.  When it detects that someone is not wearing a mask, it will friendly remind: "You must always wear the mask properly".  When the customer complies, the robot will politely add: "Thank you for wearing a mask".

"Businesses and shops often have to arrange a lot of staff at the entrance to make sure everyone wear masks during the Covid-19 season but this brings a lot of trouble. With a robot like this, employees can continue to focus on their main jobs, instead of just reminding people to wear masks, which sometimes leads to insensitive situations.

People feel more comfortable if they are reminded by a robot that wearing a mask is essential for everyone at a time of epidemic” said Jonathan Boiria, Head of Sales of SoftBank Robotics Europe.

Pepper was also put into operation in a number of German supermarkets with the aim of ensuring social distance from the early months of the Covid-19 pandemic.  Each of these robots can cost between 17,000 and 20,000 euros and prices will depend on the different functions the robot is programmed with.

Robovie is a robot deployed by a store to remind people to wear masks and to keep a safe distance when shopping.

Robovie was developed by the Tokyo-based International Advanced Telecommunication Research Institute and first tested at a souvenir shop at the Osaka soccer club Cerezo.  Testing started last week and runs through November.

Robovie's mission is to be able to detect customers who are not wearing masks and politely remind them.  Besides, this robot also requires people to keep a certain distance when paying.

To do this, Robovie is equipped with a facial recognition camera system and sensors to observe the movements of people around.  Cameras will identify the person wearing the mask, while laser sensors will measure the distance between each person.

The robot development team Robovie expects testing will help customers feel more comfortable when shopping, while limiting the spread of Covid-19.  "We believe that, compared to employees, who are reminded by robots will be more comfortable and less embarrassed," said the team representative.
