Research shown: Some homemade sunscreen formulas are not enough to protect the skin
UV radiation protection is always a concern for many people when choosing to buy sunscreen. There is a potential danger in making homemade sunscreen advertising popular on Pinterest.
US researchers have studied recipes for homemade sunscreen shared on Pinterest. Their ruling: most of them provide insufficient UV radiation protection.

Social networking is the main point that reflects all DIY trends, including the growing popularity of homemade cosmetics. However, not all products shared there are as healthy as we think. A recent study published in Health Communication and conducted in the United States by the Center for Research and Injury Policy (National Children’s Hospital) and the University of Brooks College of Medical North Florida has demonstrated that.
The authors of the study focused on homemade sunscreen formulas found on social networks – Pinterest concentrated on images and found that 95% of the 189 pins pinned (pictures related to one table most). Dedicated natural sunscreens emphasize their effectiveness, while 68% of them offer insufficient UV radiation protection.

Experts working on the study claim that brand sunscreens are also unsure of the criteria. More alarmingly, these images are widely available, and even one of them is pinned more than 21,700 times.
Study co-author Lara McKenzie, Ph.D., principal investigator in the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children’s said: “Homemade sunscreen products are risky because they are not regulated or tested for efficacy like commercial sunscreens. When you make it yourself, you don’t know if it’s safe or effective”.
Doctors say the sunscreens shown on Pinterest are not reliable. Most Do-It-Yourself products can be sunscreen. These products are not tested scientifically.
“We’re taking a risk with our children, with ourselves, and that risk is a really bad sunburn or skin cancer in the future,” added Lara McKenzie.
“I think parents get tripped-up on the words all-natural or homemade, and they automatically think – well, it’s homemade, it’s got to be the best product. But that’s not always the case,” said Niki Chave.
