1. Nutritional compensation for anticancer

Many people worry that too good nutrient absorption will make cancer cells grow faster, but in fact "starving" does not kill cancer cells.  On the contrary, in clinical practice, if during cancer treatment, the cancer patient is provided with adequate nutrition, helping to maintain body weight to combat side effects during treatment.  In addition, increasing resistance to infection, ensuring digestive function, will have the effect of accelerating recovery, improving radiotherapy completion rates, and thereby reducing the number of days hospitalized.

How much nutrition is enough?  The food the cancer patient eats is no different from the normal person, the more variety the better, but in order to have enough strength to overcome pain during treatment, recommend the total amount of daily calorie intake should be 20% higher than when not sick, while protein should be increased by 50%.

 Normally, a healthy adult's calorie intake is 30 kcal per kilogram of body weight, while protein is 1 gram of protein per kilogram of body weight.  According to this principle, assuming a person with cancer weighing 60 kg is undergoing treatment, the daily calorie intake should increase from 1800 calories to 2160 calories (36 calories per kg of body weight).  Daily protein intake from 60 grams increased to 90 grams (1.5 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight), increasing the proportion of daily calories from 14% to 17% (calories per gram of protein is 4 kcal), so the absorption rates between the three important nutrients (proteins, fats, carbohydrates) and the six main foods (grains, fats, caviar, milk, vegetables, fruits) should be adjusted.

3. Calories, protein and fish oil are essential nutrients

When the loss of body weight will affect the effectiveness of treatment, so for cancer patients, what kind of nutrients are needed every day?  Calories, protein and fish oil are the three essential nutrients, the best calories per day are 30-35 kcal per kilogram of body weight, while protein is 1.2 to 1.5 grams, and fish oil is from 2 gram or more is enough to fight inflammation and help maintain muscle structure, enhance physical strength and active dose, thereby helping to reduce the rate of infection requiring hospitalization.  But if the patient's weight is declining, it is necessary to increase the protein and caloric level to help the patient solve the problem of malnutrition and regain the weight.

4. Attention!  Kidney cancer regimen requires "low protein"

It should be emphasized that, for patients with kidney cancer, since abnormal kidney cells increase to form tumors, causing certain damage to kidney function, so diet must follow the principle of "low protein", based on the glomerular filtration index (GFR = glomerular filtration rate), the daily protein intake decreases from 0.6 to 0.8 grams per kg of body weight to avoid producing too much nitrogen-containing waste, increasing the burden.  Severe for the kidneys.  But at the same time the total amount of calories absorbed is still not lower than other cancer patients;  Clinically most recommend the use of "low protein starch" and a moderate amount of "vegetable oil" to prepare snacks, such as: sago (starch extracted from the porous intestine of  various types of tropical palm trees), tapioca ball, tapioca ball (black jelly or marigold) or pudding, to provide enough calories for the body.

5. What is the combination between animal protein and plant protein?

Since protein plays an important role in the effectiveness of anticancer therapy, what should be chosen for the two proteins of animal and plant origin?

Whether the quality of a protein is good or bad is often judged by the "biological value" (BV), the higher the biological value, the better the quality, corresponding to the amount of nitrogen waste (protein) the smaller the metabolism, the more can be absorbed and used by the body.

 In principle, animal protein foods are mostly proteins of high biological value, while plant proteins due to lack of essential amino acids should be classified as low biological value proteins.  But recent studies have verified that soy protein is of the same quality as egg and dairy protein (egg 94, milk 84, soybean 74) and is also a highly bioavailable protein food, which is considered real. Because protein is an anticancer weapon so protein supplements should be given priority.

The daily amount of protein absorbed by cancer patients should be 50-75% from protein foods with high biological value, in which white meats (e.g. fish, chicken) are preferred which have relatively low saturated fat, and limited red meat.  As for protein from rice, noodles and vegetables with low biological value, it is not advisable to use it under the direction of a nutritionist.

6. Combine B6 and folic acid to increase the efficiency of protein absorption

Protein is an important component to build the human body and repair organs, for cancer patients, the proper supplementation of protein will reduce the side effects of treatment and increase the effectiveness of treatment, but obviously not to take as much protein as possible, there should be a limit to each meal.  It is recommended that the required amount of protein per day should be distributed evenly in all 3 meals of the day (even during snacks), avoiding too much concentration on one or two meals during the day.

 For better protein absorption and utilization, foods rich in vitamin B6 and folic acid are recommended.  Vitamin B6 helps in protein metabolism, folic acid helps in protein synthesis.  The meats themselves are rich in B6, which should be combined with vegetables and fruits that are rich in folic acid.

 But it should be noted that choose oil from a vegetable source such as: canola oil, olive oil, peanut oil, tea seed oil or sesame oil;  avoid unhealthy animal fats (such as: fried foods) or snacks containing unsaturated fats (e.g., margarine), and limit the intake of high fat and salt, especially, it is necessary to limit fried foods as well as fatty meat.
