New in-car entertainment experiences
On Monday, the German carmaker announced a new partnership with tech startup Holoride. As part of the collaboration, Porsche vehicles will soon debut with the company’s advanced VR and AR experiences technologies.
Owing to the technology of Holoride, passengers will no longer have to keep free space for long drives. Instead, they can find refuge in different 3-dimensional worlds on their way to their destination with VR headsets.
As part of the feedback system, each headset will have sensors to track the movement of the vehicle, so that when the car changes lanes or turns, that movement is reflected in the virtual environment.
At this time, the team is still unclear what VR experiences will be available, but potential examples include flights through a future city and a journey through time. The companies claim that they are working to develop 2-way document content for the system with US media company Discovery, along with a host of other educational and entertainment content already included in the works.
The company hopes to bring VR in its cars into production by 2021. When Porsche holds the position of an early adopter, it seems that the outside world, real or VR, this technology will be featured in the company of the car and SUV company shortly thereafter.
Neither Porsche nor Holoride has yet to disclose the content that will be available as part of their collaboration, but the companies said that they are working to develop 2-way document content for the system with the discovery. The startup hopes to bring its car VR technology to production by 2021, and it may switch to cars from other carmakers.
