Online shopping in Korea is growing fast



Online shopping in "Korea" amounted to 15.89 trillion won ($14.1 billion) in March, up 26.4% year-on-year.

Online shopping in the country grew at double digits in March thanks to strong demand during the COVID-19 pandemic, Statistics Korea said.

Online shopping in "Korea" amounted to 15.89 trillion won ($14.1 billion) in March, up 26.4% over the same period last year, the fastest growth rate in about two and a half years since October 2018.

Online shopping for food, including food delivery, increased by 62.4% during this time as people were still restricting outside activities.  Online shopping for home appliances, electronics and communications grew 22%, and demand for travel and transportation services nearly doubled thanks to loosening quarantine measures.

Also in March, smartphone purchases reached 10.98 trillion won ($9.8 billion), up 29.4% year-on-year, accounting for 69.1% of total online shopping value.
