New therapy helps stop the spread of brain cancer cells

Israeli researchers have found a method known as "paving the way for a new therapy" to treat dangerous brain cancer.

Israeli scientists have found a compound that can suppress the spread of glioblastoma in mice and humans in a laboratory study.  By blocking specific proteins from reaching the brain's immune cells, they believe it could reduce the number of people dying from dangerous brain cancer.

Patients with malignant brain cancer have only one-year survival rates of 40% and 5% after 5 years, even with surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.  However, Professor Ronit Satchi-Fainaro said she hopes that new research done on mice and laboratory models will make the disease controllable or even completely cured.

The team, including professor Ronit Satchi-Fainaro, edited hundreds of mice to give them glioblastoma, which accounts for half of all primary brain cancers and is considered a type of brain cancer.  The most dangerous.  Brain tumors in the rats both developed and they died within a few weeks, unless they were given a chemical compound to suppress the production of the P-selectin protein.  The mice on the P-selectin inhibitor all recovered and survived.

Professor Satchi-Fainaro said that the protein-blocking compound that inhibits the growth of cancer cells was taken from the patient and put into a 3D model of the human brain in the laboratory.

The problem with the human immune system is partly due to the body secreting a protein called P-selectin.  Normally this protein functions to help cells move around in the body, but when it comes into contact with brain immune cells, it is likely to undergo a change in function, for example, instead of inhibiting its spread of cancer cells, allowing cancer cells to continuously reproduce and penetrate brain tissue.

The research was published in Nature Communications journal. Professor Satchi-Fainaro said she hopes human trials will be conducted soon and it can be concluded that blocking P-Selectin protein is a treatment for glioblastoma.
