Medicine herbs are researched by Chinese scientists at peak time of Covid-19
Since the outbreak of severe acute Respiratory syndrome (SARS) in 2002-2003, the scientists has constantly researched the effects of herbs in order to be able to combine them with the treatment method of Western medicine. Although the current Covid-19 disease has not terminated yet in China but Chinese researchers have obtained some promising results from clinical observations.
China has about half of the patients treated with herbal medicine. Doctors reported that the east-west combined medicine therapy significantly reduced the severity of symptoms, decreased mortality and side effects.
Can herbs repel the damages of Coronavirus?

Zhang is a member of the Advisory Board for the government, indicating that the survey results showed that team A in Guangzhou treated 50 patients by combination of Western medicine with herbs and did not appear any serious symptoms. Specifically, in Shanghai, patients was treated by combining just take approximately 7-8 days before being negative to the virus, but if only being treated by the Western medicine can take more than 10 days to recover.
A study by the University of Hong Kong involving local patients, also proposed herbal treatments as a safe, effective and affordable SARS precaution.
The herbal supporters pointed out that China had undergone over 320 epidemic periods since the Han dynasty over 2,000 years ago. Traditional Chinese Medicine system has accumulated a lot of experience in the times of fighting the epidemics.
Dr. Tu Youyou, who won the Nobel prize in Medicine in 2015 about artemisinin malaria, has saved millions of patients’ lives. Her formula is explored from compounds in a number of traditional herbs.
One of the most obvious testimonies is that all 58 patients at a public hospital in Guangzhou recovered and no medical personnels were infected. A study by the University of Hong Kong regarding local patients also proposed herbal treatments as a safe, effective and affordable SARS prevention measure.
Is Honeysuckle (Oriental Medicine herb) capable of repelling the Covid-19 virus?
Is Honeysuckle capable of repelling the Covid-19 virus?
A study by Zhang Chenyu, professor of Nanjing University, solved a part of the problem. In a landmark article published in the Cell Research Magazine in 2014, Zhang’s group discovered that the Honeysuckle tree could remove the influenza A virus in rats effectively.
The Honeysuckle tree contains some small molecules, characterized by the genetic material known as mARN that can be associated with the strain of virus and slows its doubleness in human gene. Prior to this study, it was believed that the genetic material in the plant was very fragile and easily destroyed by environmental factors.
But Zhang’s research showed that these plant mARN fragments could remain almost intact after being boiled – a mandatory procedure when preparing herbal medicines, and they tended to concentrate in the lungs of rats. These herbal treatment experiments have increased by more than double the survival rate of rats.
The research leads to a lively discussion in the scientific research community, because if the plant can destroy the virus, it can also destroy the gene. The genetically modified plant species such as soybeans and maize were certified safe for consumers because scientists believed that plants could not change the genetic code in human cells. Therefore, to date, no genetically modified animals are approved as food, because they are considered closer to humans, from which there is a higher risk for health from disturbance of genes.
This study is very meaningful in finding a close-up remedy with the Chinese to fight against the SARS-Cov-2 virus that is outbreaking in the world. Several days after the publication of the complete genome sequence of the SARS-Cov-2 virus in the previous month, a study group of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Shanghai created a list of a dozen of herbs that can inhibit viruses by imitating on computer how these herbs interact with the virus strain.
Chinese researchers have also exploited the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Center, one of the world’s most expensive and advanced light sources, to study the actual structure of the virus to find clues for a successful therapy.
The impact of many types of herbs is difficult to quantitative, and “When you put all of them on a soup bowl, it is no longer science, it’s an art “, a doctor (who asked to remain anonymous) said.
It is also difficult to say exactly how the herbs work; Because in almost all cases, they were taken by patients in combining with Western medicines, and some patients in critical condition also received technical support such as artificial lung.
Herbal supporters have pointed out that China has undergone more than 320 times of epidemic combat which recorded since the Han dynasty over 2,000 years ago. The Chinese doctors have accumulated a rich knowledge and experience from these combats to apply into the today’s medicine.
Dr. Tu Youyou, who won the Nobel prize in artemisinin malaria drugs, rescued millions of people by taking the idea from a plant used in traditional herbal formulations.
However, health experts think that China will need to take time to convince other nations, especially Western countries, to apply herbal treatments in fighting against the Covid-19 virus due to the lack of evidence that it works. Furthermore, there is a big concern on toxicity of some herbal medicine, and some animals will be endangered when their organs are used in some cures.
