Medical cannabis demand is growing in Italy

Italy is going to triple the quantity of medical marijuanas to be produced domestically due to high demand of medical cannabis treatments.

Medical cannabis benefits

Medical marijuanas uses the marijuana plant to treat diseases. The plant contains more than 100 different chemicals called cannabinoids which have different effects on the body. So what can medical cannabis treat? It can be used to treat a number of different conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease, appetite loss, cancer, crohn’s disease, mental health conditions like schizophrenia, nausea, pain, wasting syndrome (cachexia), etc..

The growing demand for medical uses of cannabis in Italy

Based on the psychotropic substances quota in Italy, which covers medical cannabis, the Stabilimento Chimico Farmaceutico di Firenze (SCFF) is allowed to produce 500 kilograms (1,102 pounds) of cannabis flower in 2020. It is stated in a decree recently published in Italy’s official Gazette. In 2018, the amount of medical marijuana sold to patients in Italy was 578 kilograms. But this amount is expected to increase significantly for 2019. Also, the production for cannabis medical needs of the SCFF is estimated to be below 200 kilograms. At the moment, the medical marijuana sold in Italy mostly comes from the Netherlands. It is exported by the Dutch government Office of Medicinal Cannabis and produced by Bedrocan.

Aurora Cannabis is the only Canadian-based company supplying in Italy. Since early 2018, Aurora has supplied 100 kilograms to the country. Recently, the Italian region of Tuscany and the SCFF agreed to produce medical cannabis and to generate evidence on the efficacy and safety of the drug. This project will focus on three areas, including the production of cannabis flower for medical use, the standardization of oil extracts and the design and conduct of clinical trials. The amount that SCFF will contribute to this project is 600,000 euros and the region of Tuscany contributes 795,000 euros, making the total amount up to 1.4 million euros ($1.5 million).
