Korean Private Investors make a big bet on Samsung Electronics

Korean private investors have placed a big bet on Samsung Electronics this year, but haven't yet to get positive results due to the recent decline in the company's stock price.

According to data released on February 8 by the Korea Stock Exchange, the country's private investors have made big bets on the technology giant Samsung Electronics this year, but the private investors haven't yet get good results as the company's stock price has declined recently.

South Korea: Private Investors make a big bet on Samsung Electronics

Specifically, South Korean private investors have net bought 13,400 billion won (about $11.9 billion) worth of the world's leading smartphone and memory chip maker stock this year,  accounting for more than 50% of the total net buying value of 23,600 billion won of stocks listed on the main stock market of Korean private investors.

As a result, Samsung Electronics, the “darling” of Samsung Group, has become the issuer of stocks purchased by Korean private investors mostly this year.  Korean private investors are still net buyers of Samsung Electronics stocks until the end of January, and stocks of this Korean tech giant have been bought mostly for the fifth consecutive week.

Despite investing heavily, Korean private investors recorded negative profits due to a drop in Samsung Electronics' stock price.  In particular, Korean private investors' earnings from Samsung Electronics' stocks were at -3.5% as of Feb. 5, with an average buying price of 86,500 won per stock.

However, good news for Korean private investors is that many domestic securities firms are raising their target prices for Samsung Electronics thanks to the positive outlook of the semiconductor industry.

Observers believe that DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory) chip prices could rise much higher than expected thanks to increased demand for remote work due to Covid-19 pandemic and other positive factors.
