KLM Airline is developing new aircraft seat design

July 31, 2019

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, the Dutch national airline, announced its investment plan of developing the V-shape fuel-saving aircraft named Flying-V. The model is the ideal of Justus Benad when he was a student at the Technical University of Berlin, which aims at improving the sustainability of aviation industry.

New aircraft model of the near future

Smart ideal of new aircraft wing design

The new aircraft is being developed by researchers at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands (TU Delft). Flying-V design integrates cabin, fuel tank and cargo compartment in the wings. The aircraft uses 20% less fuel than Airbus A350-900 while carrying the same number of passengers. Flying-V can carry 314 passengers while Airbus A350 can carry 300-350 ones.

Moreover, it has a wingspan of 65 m, which is suitable for current airport infrastructure. Although the aircraft will still use fuel-efficient turbofan, it can be completely replaced by a new environmentally friendly electric jet engine in the future.

Flying-V is a promising product for the future of aviation industry

According to Roelof Vos, the leader of project team at TU Delft, Flying-V is a design which aims at increasing the efficiency for the aviation industry while waiting for ultra-light electric aircraft to be completed. “Aviation is contributing about 2.5% of global CO2 emissions and the industry is still growing, so we really need to consider more sustainable aircraft”, he told CNN.

Actually, current electric aircraft are too heavy and can not carry passengers across the Atlantic for at least the next 30 years. So, the team develops technology that helps reduce fuel consumption in other ways. The fuselage also contributes to increase the lift and create less aerodynamic resistance.

Vos said that aircraft used fuel more efficiently thanks to aerodynamic design. The team hopes to be able to pilot Flying-V microcosm in September this year. The complete model is expected to be introduced between 2040 – 2050. Following Vuhes daily for more updates about airline industry trends.
