The menu is mainly starch, but why do Koreans still keep in shape?

Rice rolls, noodles, rice cakes, mixed rice ... are typical dishes of Korea.  Their common feature is that they are all made from starch, but surprisingly very few people are obese.

It is said that one in two Koreans is on a diet.  The Korean diet is mainly based on low-carb foods because of cultural characteristics.  The "kimchi country" philosophy of a healthy diet is to reduce the amount of greasy or high-carb foods to lose weight naturally.

These cooking methods make up the majority of Korean dishes.  It was only until recently that some of the new Korean foods were high in fat and carbs as they were leaning towards a more Western approach.  However, traditional dishes have a wide variety of soups, vegetable and meat dishes.

Through social media education and TV shows, Koreans are encouraged to follow a healthy eating plan by meeting a ratio of 50% protein, 30% carbohydrates, and 20% fat from the food group.

1. Koreans focus on eating low-carb and healthy foods

 Even though Koreans are on a healthy diet, they also have a wide variety of delicious fat-filled options.  The most important thing to start losing weight is to figure out how many calories you can eat for the day.  

A common way to do this is to multiply your body weight (in pounds) by 12 so you can calculate your daily calories.  For example, if you weigh 130 pounds (58kg), your daily calories will be 130 X 12 = 1560. Then you can choose the foods you will eat for the day and distribute the food calories in two or three meals.

 The most common mistake we make is to think we ate the right calories for the day, but when you keep track of the list of foods you ate for the day, you may end up eating more calories than you should eat.  Koreans are very careful when choosing food and try to avoid overeating.  They focused on how to eat fewer calories than daily calories.

2. They eat a lot of soups and stews

 Many of the most popular dishes in Korea include stews: kimchijigae (kimchi stew), doenjang-jjigae (soybean stew), Soondubu (stewed tofu).  All of these stews contain only a very small amount of meat.  The stews mainly consist of vegetables and tofu and sauces.  These stews are served with a variety of banchan and rice.  In particular, the hot spicy stews fill us up very quickly!

3. They live very active

 Koreans are not afraid to go hiking.  If you go to a big city like Seoul or even a small local town, many people walk 10 to 15 minutes to get home after getting off the subway or bus stop.

 Public transport is very developed in big cities because parking lots are expensive, which also means more mobility in people.

 Street food is also a very important part of Korean culinary culture.  After eating these foods and going for a walk, they will go to the office, shopping mall or market, in the process, people have burned their calorie intake.

  When walking, calories are burned faster, making the body lighter and gradually forming a habit of walking.  The active lifestyle of the Korean people is worth applying more to our lives.
