The shopping season is coming and according to federal authorities, online scammers have targeted tens of thousands of holiday shoppers in 2019. So how to not get scammed buying online?

Online scammers are on the rise

As reported by the Department of Homeland Security investigators, the value of counterfeit goods was more than $500 million in 2018. This such a huge amount should have taken a toll on online consumers. However, it seems that they choose to ignore this figure. Although there were hundreds of arrests and convictions, this crime is still growing, especially when in the shopping season has arrived.

According to research, 20% of British consumers are targeted for the online scammers and roughly £5 billion of British people is at the risk of credit card fraud. Another survey found out that more than one-fifth people worldwide had to replace or cancel their credit card as a consequence of this online crime. Each of them lost about £846, leading to the loss of £4.7 billion to the nation. So how to avoid online shopping scams?

Before knowing what to do if you think you’re being scammed, you need to know what the scammers often do to obtain your money illegally. These potential scammers often use exaggerated discounts and giveaways to attack consumers who are looking for ways to save money online.

Homeland Security investigators have worked with some companies such as Apple on how to prevent online shopping scams. They aim at finding the root of the fraudulent sellers by collaborating with popular sales platforms, including Amazon and eBay. One of the useful tips to avoid online shopping scams, according to experts, is to consider carefully about a too-good-to-be-true deal on fakes of luxurious products. Here are how to not get scammed buying online.
