Food and Drink Trends 2021: Fast food and takeout food are on Trend

The COVID-19 pandemic changed the French eating habits.  In the context of a blockade, the restaurant and bar were closed at the same time a curfew was issued, 2020 is the year of the trend of three categories including selling fast food, selling takeaway food and selling food for car rides.

Market research company NPD Group (USA) has noted as above in the study evaluating the service of out-of-home dining in France in 2020, published on February 9 (local time).

The study assessed that the food and beverage industry in general had failed, with sales of 35.6 billion euros in 2020 and a 35 percent decrease in number of buyers, while in 2019 turnover amounted to 57 billion euros.

Meanwhile, fast food is the only growing sector in the 2020 French food business market in France with 36% of consumers opting for fast food.

The takeaway food selling service, which used to perform well before the pandemic, has now only decreased by a quarter of sales while table food and drink service has decreased by 50%.

NPD Group estimates that the Covid-19 epidemic is no different than a "push" for the takeaway food industry.

It turns out that takeaway food services have increased by 7% market share which attracts 43% of the buyers compared to 36% in 2019.

Talking to the AFP news agency, expert Maria Bertoch, working for NPD Group, commented that the takeaway food segment accounted for 15% of food service in 2019, but by 2020 it has increased to 30%, thus "many food businesses have limited their losses".

The proof is that while the total number of buyers has fallen by 71% during the first blockade in France (March 17 to May 11, 2020), by November and December 2020, buyers only decreased by 43% because of a 25% increase in the number of take-away and car delivery orders.

In addition, the food delivery time has also changed compared to before the pandemic.  In the past, most food delivered to the home was made in the evening.  Now the lunch portion has increased significantly, especially when the corporate cafeterias were closed due to pandemic.

The lunch portion accounted for nearly a third of orders during the second blockade in France (October 30 to December 15, 2020) compared to May 1 in November and December 2019 according to Les Echos.

NPD Group forecasts that by 2021, the trend of selling fast food, takeaway food and food for car rides will continue to grow while the regulation of remote work is still in force in France.

However, in the summer of 2022, the table food sector could not recover because "people yearn to return to normal" as observed by expert Maria Bertoch.
