First record of black hole swallowing a star equivalent to the Sun

Thanks to luck and acumen, astronomers have recorded the moment a giant black hole is swallowing a star at a distance of 215 million light years.

This is known as a "dine" (TDE - tidal disruption event) and is the first time humans have witnessed the death of a star so close to a black hole, according to RT.

Astronomers are attracted to powerful rays of light, spreading hundreds of millions of light years, before parts of the star disappear into the black hole due to being swallowed by the black hole with its enormous gravity.

Astronomer Matt Nicholl and colleagues at the University of Birmingham noticed that the star approached a black hole in September 2019.  Astronomers took turns observing for the next six months.

The phenomenon of a black hole swallowing a star is difficult to predict and can only be observed with the acumen and luck.

"We immediately pointed the telescope in that direction to see how the rays spread," said astronomer Thomas Wevers from the University of Cambridge, UK.

A series of telescopes in Europe and elsewhere jointly observed the scene, capturing data on light waveforms, including ultraviolet, radio, optical and X-rays.

At the time it begins to be swallowed up by the black hole, the star that produces the strongest light spreads far and wide and then slowly fades and disintegrates, completely disappearing into the black hole.

According to estimates, the researchers say the star swallowed by the black hole has the same mass as the Sun, while the giant black hole is millions of times more massive.

"This event tells us more about the physical phenomena that occur when a black hole swallows up a star which is considered to be importance event to the astronomy community", said Harvard-Smithsonian astronomer Edo Berger, from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.
