The largest aircraft over the globe

May 07, 2019

Recently, Stratolaunch Systems Corporation, an American space transportation venture developing a new air launch to orbit system, has unveiled the world’s “largest all-composite aircraft” named the Stratolaunch. Its wingspan is longer than a football field and the plane is used to launch rockets from the air.

About the Stratolaunch

The Stratolaunch completed its first flight on April 13th, 2019 after 8 years of anticipation. The wing tip length of the aircraft is 385 feet (117 meters), which is long enough to cross a whole American football field.  The Stratolaunch is able to spend two and half hours in the air with the speed of 189 mph (304 km/h) thanks to six Boeing 747 engines.

The aircraft was designed with a hope to launch rockets the size of a NASA space shuttle one day, according to Paul Allen, one of the world’s most renowned technology entrepreneurs who died last October. Paul’s sister Jody Allen and chairman of Vulcan Inc said that Paul would have been proud to witness that historic engineering achievement as he was involved in making the aircraft.

Allen’s goal for the company and its namesake aircraft was to “provide convenient, reliable, and routine access to low-Earth orbit”/ Ph: Stratolaunch

The company’s ambition is to launch their payloads up to orbit using this delivery system. In 2018, Stratolaunch announced that they would attach some vehicles to the underbelly of the aircraft including the Pegasus, an unnamed medium-class air-launch vehicle and a three-core variant of the said medium-class air-launch vehicle.

In short, Stratolaunch is such a massive airplane of all time. In the future, it is expected to carry not only goods but also humans to discover the space.
