Holy Week – The Semana Santa of Málaga : April 9-16th
The Semana Santa of Málaga, which has been declared a Fiesta of International Tourist Interest, is a true religious, social and cultural event of the city. As is traditional, the brotherhoods will again this year put a true show on the street that can be enjoyed by our five senses between 29 March and 5 April when the first full moon of spring will also occur: huge thrones to carry the images that will be rocked during the whole procession, thousands of penitents that will be giving light and colour with their candles, processional marches, the smell of incense and flowers and, of course, the whole city on the street ready to vibrate and clap for their holy saints.
The legendary city of Malaga has a history of more than three thousand years which makes it one of the oldest human settlements in the history. The Phoenicians first arrived on this land in the 7 century BC and they named it as Malaca. The Phoenicians used this city as a trading port and also for salting fishes. In the 8 century, the Umayyad Muslims ruled the city, during which the city of Malaga became an important business centre. During the reign of the Moors the city was under the law of the Caliphate of Córdoba, and ultimately with the constant rise and fall of the Muslim rulers, the city came under the leadership of the Nasrids, in Granada. It was during this period that the city became a prosperous textile industry. The Alcazaba and the Gibralfaro fortress were also built during this period.
