Detox has emerged in recent times as a way to lose weight and detoxify the body.  But do detox drinks work? Is detox really effective?  Let's see what nutritionists say about detox.

Detox is widely promoted as a quick method of detoxifying the body for many different purposes.  However, detox isn't always the best decision for your health - and it can actually be detrimental to your health, according to American nutritionists.

 Here's what you need to know about why detox may be ineffective and the possible risks of detox for your health.

Detox is actually a medical remedy to remove harmful chemicals such as drugs and alcohol from the body.

 Currently, the only recommended and medically supervised detoxification method is chelation, which flushes toxins and heavy metal detox out of the body through the urinary tract.

According to nutritionists, we need this type of detox when our body builds up something like lead and your blood is filtering that toxin all over the body.

 However, in recent times, detox trends have emerged as a way to eliminate toxins that can accumulate from unhealthy lifestyles, such as drinking alcohol or eating sweets.

 The trendy detox is often advertised as effective: losing weight, increasing energy, treating constipation, relieving headaches, relieving muscle pain or fatigue.

I. Common types of detox

There are many different types of detox, each of which is said to have health benefits:

- Diet: This type of detox includes fasting for a long time.  The idea is that you take a break from consuming foods that can cause toxins to accumulate in the body.

- Fluid: This type of detox will only eat specific fluids or juices for a period of time.  The goal is usually to lose weight.

- Exercise too hard or steam regularly: This type of detox wants to detox through heavy sweating.

- Use laxatives: Some people may use laxatives to try to "self-empty" and clear the colon.

Currently, there are no studies to prove that these trend-following detox methods are effective.

According to nutritionists, in addition to meeting the daily needs of fruits and vegetables and whole grains, detox doesn't really have any additional benefits. In fact, your body has its own detox system, in which there are organs responsible for releasing toxins:

 - Gastrointestinal tract: excretion of residue.

 - Liver: the main filtration system to help process and excrete waste from the body.

- Kidney: excretion of excess fluids in the urine.

 Although some people may initially lose weight while doing detox, this weight loss is often unsustainable because it does not solve the root of the problem - often an unhealthy diet.

Doctors said that normally, people with unhealthy diets have detoxification will eat more vegetables and drink more water -  This can help them lose weight at first. However, a week later, when you get back into your old eating habits, you'll accumulate that fluid and gain weight back pretty quickly. A good rule of thumb in weight loss is that those that are lost quickly usually increase quickly again. 

III. Risks of detox

 Whenever you force your body to endure this series of random shocks, it may give a lasting harm.

 Below are some of the health risks associated with detox:

1. Severe calorie restriction can cause a host of negative health effects

 On average, adult men should consume between 2,000 and 3,000 calories;  women between 1,600 and 2,400 per day.

Diet or detox methods that only eat liquid foods significantly reduce caloric intake.

 When you are calorie deprived for a long time, bone health can suffer.  This can also disrupt the electrolyte balance - risk of muscle contraction.

The heart beats thanks to the electrolyte balance, specifically between potassium and sodium. When that is interrupted, problems can arise such as heart problems like tachycardia.

 Although this may not be a problem in short-term detox, it can happen if you repeatedly detox several times a year.

2. Overuse of laxatives can harm the colon

 Overuse of laxatives can cause inflammation, disrupting the natural function of the colon, which absorbs water and breaks down food.

 Doctors said that from a microscopic perspective and a cellular perspective, we can actually see changes in the colon of people who take laxatives to detox.

 Overuse of laxatives can also cause colon infection, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and may increase the risk of colon cancer.

 In addition, those who abuse stimulant laxatives may become dependent on them.  If they quit smoking, their bowel function slows down and they may not be able to have regular bowel movements.

3. Detox with juice increases blood sugar

 If you are detoxing with vegetable juice, you are not consuming solid, nutrient-rich foods.  This means your body doesn't have lasting energy.  Instead, the juice causes blood sugar to spike for a short time before dropping.

 These changes in blood sugar can be especially dangerous if you have diabetes or heart or liver problems.

The detox trend has been promoted to provide many health benefits such as weight loss and detoxification.  However, detox can give short-term, unsustainable weight loss and ultimately cause serious health problems like colitis.  According to doctors, trendy diets are almost never the way to maintain weight loss or enhance your overall health.

The better way is to change to a healthier lifestyle by eating more fruits, vegetables and fiber; not adding substances that could be considered harmful to the body.
