Beautiful edible fungi that you might not know about

Beautiful fungi is not necessarily poisonous or can’t be eaten. In this article, we will take a look at some special fungi that is beautiful and edible.

People say that gorgeous fungi are poisonous. However, there are some really beautiful edible fungi that are full of vitamins and minerals.

#1: Yellow brain (Tremella mesenterica)

Yellow brain can be found in the UK and Ireland

Yellow brain is a parasitic fungi which looks like an orange gelatinous mass. It was found in 1796 by Anders Jahan Retzius-a Swedish scientist. Yellow brain doesn’t have the typical structure of other woodland fungi. The lobes are tough and greasy. When it is wet, it looks slimy and when it is dry, it looks hard. This beautiful edible fungi also has a wide range of color, from pale yellow to bright orange, even rusty orange.

You can find yellow brain fungi throughout the UK and Ireland. It can also be found in temperate regions in America, Asia and Australia. It is often seen growing on fallen branches of deciduous trees, gorse and other dead wood in woodland. In China, yellow brain is used as an ingredient for soups. Additionally, it produces certain biological compounds that have shown anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic properties. However, we need more research on this.

#2: Truffles

Truffles are insanely expensive

Truffles are beautiful edible fungi which grows underground near tree roots. This can be the most expensive fungi in the world, sometimes as much as thousands of dollars per pound. This fungi is hard to find and difficult to grow. Also, you can’t store it for more than a week. It can only be found in Europe and California. That’s why its price is so insanely high. Black truffles from France and white truffles from Italy are the two most highly valued. They are considered to be delicacies in gastronomy and the art of cooking.

Truffles is not only known for its taste, but also its aroma which comes from a multitude of chemicals. It is usually cleaned by hand and grated or sliced paper-thin atop warm food, in order to absorb its aroma.
Apart from these two, there are still other fungi that is beautiful and edible. And of course, they are not very popular.
