Australia-New Zealand Tourism Bubble will be connected on April 19

On April 5, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, said New Zealand will allow Australian tourists to visit without isolation from April 19, 2021 after these two neighboring countries officially connected the "tourism bubble".

Although most Australian states have allowed New Zealanders to visit without isolation for months, New Zealand continues to enforce quarantine against people coming from neighboring countries, citing concerns on outbreaks of COVID-19.

The move to allow cross-border travel without the mandatory COVID-19 check was one of the first deals since the pandemic that forced countries to strictly control foreign arrivals to prevent  spread of the virus.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison called the agreement "the first of many to come ... as we return to a more normal position, not only this year but beyond".

Coronavirus has been effectively destroyed in both countries, with small outbreaks.  Australia has recorded about 29,400 viral infections and 909 deaths since the pandemic began, while New Zealand had just over 2,100 confirmed cases and 26 deaths.

According to 2018 data, about 568,000 New Zealanders live in Australia, equivalent to 2.3% of the Australian population and Australia's fourth largest migrant community.

According to New Zealand data, 1.5 million Australians (about 40%) arrived in New Zealand in 2019, a year before the pandemic closed, contributing 2.7 billion NZD (1.9 billion USD) to the economy of this country.  It is said that arrivals are forecast to reach 80% by the beginning of 2022.

Travel operators can now confidently book and expand their staffing.

Flights to and from certain Australian states may still be suspended if local outbreaks occur.   Travelers must wear a mask on flights and follow up with New Zealand, while the "travel bubble" does not apply to people transiting through Australia from other countries.

The "travel bubble" will operate under a "beware of leaflets" system, with no new support from the New Zealand government for people stuck in Australia due to short-term cancellations.

Air New Zealand Ltd and Qantas Airways Ltd said they would increase flights between Australia and New Zealand by more than 70% of pre-pandemic levels.  This will be an opportunity to increase revenue for airlines when recently, they are almost completely dependent on the domestic market for revenue.

The "Travel Bubble" will allow the Trans-Tasman Super Football Contest with the participation of 5 teams from each country, which will take place for 5 weeks from May 14.

The Wellington Phoenix football team and the New Zealand Warriors rugby team, both participating in major Australian tournaments, can also host home matches after more than a year in Australia.

In addition to New Zealand and Australia, a number of neighboring countries have also proposed the establishment of special travel zones.  However, the Canberra-Wellington agreement was one of the first to not require testing for COVID-19.
