People in the village of Acciaroli, Italy, have a habit of using olive oil, eating a lot of self-grown vegetables, positive thinking and sublimation in romantic life.

The Cliento mountains of Italy are considered one of the longevity areas in this country.  In the village of Acciaroli, out of 700 residents, more than 10% live longer than 100 years old.  Most of the remaining villagers live to be around 90 years old.

Researchers from the University of Rome La Sapienza and University of California, San Diego, spent six months in nine villages in the Cliento region of southern Italy searching for the secret behind these places.  The research is published in the International Psychogeriatrics journal.

1. Special blood ingredients

After 6 months in the Cliento area, the researchers found that the elderly have a common feature that is abnormally good blood circulation for their age.  According to Independent, the team analyzed blood samples from more than 80 residents and found abnormally low adrenomedullin levels.  This is a hormone that dilates blood vessels.

Adrenomedullin concentration of the old people here is equivalent to a young people in the age of 20-30 years.  This hormone in high levels can cause the blood vessels to contract, leading to many other serious health conditions.

People living in this area are less likely to get the disease.  They almost do not suffer from the common chronic diseases in the elderly such as obesity, heart disease, Alzheimer's.  The research team thinks that low adrenomedullin is a factor that helps to develop optimal circulation, avoids many related diseases such as heart attack, stroke, stroke ... However, the group cannot find out the reason why decreased adrenomedullin in these people.

2. Mediterranean diet

The mystery in blood composition led researchers to hypothesize this is the result of the diet.  People in Acciaroli tend to eat fish caught locally.  In addition, they eat rabbits, home-raised chickens and supplement with olive oil, green vegetables, and homemade fruit.  Research also shows that all residents eat rosemary.  This herb is believed to help improve brain function.

According to CNN, residents of Acciaroli village eat on a Mediterranean diet with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables.  The amount of carbohydrates is moderate and they regularly eat fish.

Ms. Delia Morinelli, 83 years old, has been the chef at a restaurant in the village for many years.  According to Delia, the typical meal of the majority of residents in Acciaroli village is pasta and chickpeas.  In their kitchen there are always tomatoes, onions, basil leaves, olives, sardines, zucchini, carrots ... Many people never eat meat or butter.

Several studies have linked the Mediterranean diet with a reduced risk of heart disease.  A 2012 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine on more than 7,000 people in Spain showed the effects of a diet high in olive oil, walnuts, and almonds.  The group that ate the above foods at regular intervals for 5 years had a significantly reduced risk of stroke and heart attack.

3. Optimism and Resilience

The team's study did not focus on diet or genetics.  They found out about the characteristics of the 29 participants in the survey.  They found an unexpected optimism and resilience from these people.

The village elders experience many stresses and upheavals such as war, depression, drought, migration, illness, and death of family members.  However, they still retain optimism, hope and believe that life has many wonderful things ahead.

Aside from being optimistic, the elderly still keep their goals in life and work.  Acciaroli village lives mainly on farming and farming.  The elders have worked for decades but even when they are old, they still keep the habit of working hard.  "Life is still long and old age is when you use it to work effectively," Today quoted an old man.

4. Sublimation in romantic life

Cardiologist Alan S. Maisel in San Diego surveyed and found that the answer of many long-lived people is "sex".  "In this village, the emotional life of the elderly is still very bloody" Mr. Alan revealed.

Former navy Giuseppe Luongo shared with CNN that his secret to longevity comes from the sublimation of sex.  This old man turned 98 years old and started smoking 2 packs of cigarettes a day 9 years ago.

Giuseppe's wife died 10 years ago.  At that time, the man fell into depression because of the pain of losing a loved one.  However, after that, he encouraged himself to get through and find a way to enjoy the life that continued.  Mr. Giuseppe revealed "sex" to make me happier and more refreshing.

Antonio, the old man of 104 years old, affirms his secret of longevity as "the most beautiful woman of my life".  That is Mrs. Amina, 97 years old, his wife.  She has a cheerful, humorous personality, often writing poetry and reading it every day for her husband.

Other elders are also very close to their families and make friends.  Most of the people in the village are familiar with each other.  They often go to each other's house to play and entertain with many subjects such as chess, dancing, and chatting.

Why people in Acciaroli village live long is still a question of the world.  However, it can be said that a healthy diet and lifestyle and an optimistic spirit are the keys to prolonging their life and enjoying the good things every day.
