Recently, the Danish government has announced plans to develop a "digital vaccine passport" as a travel certificate for COVID-19 vaccinated citizens. Shortly thereafter, the Swedish government also announced that it began offering a similar digital vaccine certification, with the aim of serving the travel of people and beyond in the future.
Both Nordic countries said that the certificate would be designed to allow their citizens to travel internationally. In addition, this “passport” can also be used for checking vaccination status in the management of attendees at sporting or cultural events.
Anders Ygeman, Sweden's Minister for Digital Development, said: "With a digital vaccine certification, it becomes quicker and easier to prove that a person has completed vaccination." The Swedish government hopes to have enough facilities and equipment to issue digital certificates by June.
The Danish government has announced its program one day ahead of Sweden, saying it will initially post an online application that can be accessed to check an individual's vaccination status. This program is scheduled to be ready to come online by the end of February, while the government develops a permanent technical solution.
The Danish government has yet to make a final decision on the possibility of using the "COVID-19 passport" for a greater purpose than travel, while awaiting more studies on the possibility to transmit the virus in vaccinated people. However, the country still aims to reopen Denmark slowly, safely and appropriately.
Both countries also affirmed that efforts will be made to develop certificates at this national scale that are compatible with international certifications being discussed and reviewed by the World Health Organization (WHO) as well as at the European Union (EU) level.
WHO has come up with the idea of digital certification for vaccination in the past. However, in January, the organization said it did not agree with using them as mandatory documents for tourists' travel.
